Sometimes it's hard to tell when winter finishes and spring begins!

But once the Forsythia and the daffodils are in flower, it's safe to say the season has started.

Spring bulbs such as scilla and Chionodoxa start to cover the bare soil, before later perennials and shrubs have a chance to come into leaf.

The Narcissus are planted in large, bold blocks, sequenced to flower from late winter through to the end of spring around the whole estate, finishing with the delicately-scented pheasant eye narcissus.

Cherries and Magnolias, Ribes, Spirea and other shrubs that flower early on bare wood before the foliage appears, give us a taste of what's to come.

And by the time the Viburnum and Lilac come into bloom, you can be sure summer has just about arrived.
